A Journey Between Life and Death: A Reflection on "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi

Image
I was searching for the book for more than a year since I came to know about this book from my friend, Mithu. It was during the morning assembly conducted on World Cancer day she spoke about "when Breath Becomes Air", and its creator Paul Kalanithi. Finally the book is in my hands. As I turn the last page of it with mixed emotions, I am grateful to Biju uncle for sending me this deeply moving memoir. When Breath Becomes Air explores life, death, and the fragile line between the two. It is a book that grips the reader from the first page, pulling them into the intimate journey of a neurosurgeon confronting his mortality after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Kalanithi's writing is both poetic and raw, blending his wast knowledge in Medical sciences with philosophical musings. The book is divided into two parts: his life before the diagnosis and his life after. In the first part, Kalanithi reflects on his journey into medicine, his ardent love for Literature, and

Performance observed

This week was the most special one for me as our instructor Dr. Jayapraveen J observed my first class since practice teaching. On 5th October 2023 at fourth hour, I introduced the chapter "The Light on the Hills" by Lucy Clifford and discussed the first two paragraphs. I successfully orchestrated the strategies I made, apart from minor flaws that I'm sure I can rectify the next time. Though the class observation was unexpected for my students, they actively participated throughout the class. The same day, morning assembly was conducted in the school.   T he students who received prizes in the sub-district level sports meet were awarded certificates. The experience of teaching practice at NSS GHS Pandalam this week, was suffused with mirthful memories. We started the school week with the morning assembly. Winners of different competitions related to the Onam celebrations at the school, Science Fair and Knowledge Fest ("Arivutsavam") were declared and congratulated in the assembly.     Morning assembly- 25 September 2023                                                   With respect to the classes, I got ample opportunities to get myself acquainted with the students of VIII E, the class allotted to me for practice teaching. We discussed the story "The Little Round Red House" by Carolyn Sheldon Bailey. In fact, I was surprised to find out the evolving teacher in me, constantly in search of innovative ways of integrating teaching materials and aids for diverse learning experiences, starting from the informal interaction to the follow-up activity of each lesson. However, many students were en

It was our first day of teaching practice. I was allotted to NSS GHS Pandalam for practice teaching.  As it was my first day in school in the garb of a teacher, a feeling of excitement mixed with a little bit of anxiety gripped my heart. Moreover, the swift transition from student life to that of a responsible and reliable teacher was a real pressure.        As the school arts fest is scheduled next week, the students seemed to be in a state of excitement. Many of them were rehearsing for competition. I had to take class for VIII E students during the seventh hour. It is quite natural to feel tired and uninterested to learn as the end of the  school day approaches. But, to my surprise, they welcomed their new teacher with warm hearts, and were interested to build rapport with me. I began the lesson "The Little Round Red House", a  story of a little boy who is excited to explore new things from his surroundings. I asked them about their downtime activities and

A Matter of the Heart: Education in India- A cross section of Indian education system

Image
"A Matter of the Heart: Education in India" by Anurag Behar is a poignant examination of the multifaceted challenges and possibilities within India's education system. Behar, a noted educationist and thinker, brings to light the intricate interplay of societal, political, and economic factors that shape the landscape of education in India.   In this insightful book, Behar delves into the heart of the matter, unravelling the complexities that hinder the realization of quality education for all in India. Drawing from his extensive experience in the field, he provides a compelling narrative that underscores the urgency of addressing the fundamental issues plaguing the education sector.   One of the book's strengths lies in its holistic approach to understanding education, transcending mere academic discourse to encompass the broader socio-cultural context. Behar adeptly navigates through topics such as educational equity, teacher empowerment, curriculum refor
